Gradebook Simulation- Critical Reflection

Going into this assignment I wasn’t expecting it to be too terrible. However, once I started to work on this assignment I did start to struggle a little bit. Coming up with assignments that tied into the learning targets and standards were the most challenging part for myself. Without having the lessons done I was having issues with spacing tests and quizzes and if I had enough practice for my students before I would test them on the material.

Another challenge I faced during this assignment was calculating out the students’ grades and averages for the class. I can understand why having an online platform that calculates grades will be beneficial as a teacher, who will be inputting many assignments across all subjects. One issue I had when doing this was the fact that if some students performed poorly on certain assignments, it would harm their overall grade point average. Which means the grades are not truly showing what students are learning and can actually do.

This assignment made me think deeply about whether averaging grades is truly the best way to grade students understanding. It doesn’t truly show if students are meeting the standards they are supposed to meet. As a teacher it is my job to make sure students are truly learning and I don’t believe averaging grades is the best way to show students understanding.

This assignment overall helped strengthen my understanding of all the work that goes into keeping a grade book, and the importance of analyzing your students grades to help understand what your students know. As a future teacher I have to effectively manage the learning environment and keeping a fair and clear grading system will help with management. Another part of your role of a teacher is to make sure you are on top of your grades not only for you as a teacher but for your students and their families, so they can stay up to date on their progress. Overall, this assignment taught me very important skills that will benefit me in my future classroom in keeping a well-managed classroom.
