Classroom Arrangement- Critical Reflection

Going into this project I didn’t take into consideration all the work and parts that go into having a classroom layout that utilizes the space effectively and is beneficial for all parties involved. When I first started this project, I decided to use a classroom that I have previously been in as a framework, and that didn’t completely work out. When I first layout my classroom it was missing somethings that I thought are very beneficial for teaching lower elementary.

When I got to that point in the project I had to take into consideration what allows for more effectively managing of the learning environment and what changes to the classroom would be most beneficial. One thing I did that I felt made the classroom more efficient was moving the library space and the small group table to opposite sides of the room than where they were originally. I think having the library right by the door would be too distracting for both students in the library at the tables.

One question that I kept in mind while working on my classroom arrangement project was, Is this going to be beneficial for my students as well me? There were many points where I was deciding grouping of desks, I considered groups of 2, 4, and 6 to see what would work best. I eventually decided that groups of 4 would be most beneficial for the classroom layout, as it allows for collaboration while also keeping noise and distractions down. The grouping also allows me to walk, monitor, and teach between the desks. This is really importance as I want to teach kindergarten and first grade, and they need a lot of one-on-one instruction and complements.

Overall, this project made me consider a lot about how my ideal classroom would look, and all the components and love that go into building a space that optimizes student learning. When I get my future classroom, I have a lot to consider but I feel this class gives me the tools that will help me effectively organize the learning environment.
