Classroom Rules and Procedures- Critical Reflection

This project has brought to my attention all the work that goes into creating meaningful and effective classroom procedures and expectations. While teaching I do understand there will be times when classroom expectations and procedures will need to be adjusted or changed, having a strong base will help with classroom management. This project brought up many challenges that I have not previously thought of. After completing this assignment, I am now aware of all the components that go into writing rules and procedures.

While working on this project I created a list of things that needed procedures and as I was writing the list I just kept thinking of more things. One thing would remind me of another and then that thing would remind me of something else. I struggled with deciding if I had too much or not enough. When I finally got to putting the procedures into words, I struggled with the order and what would be taught first and what is the most important to be taught first. Thinking of my future classroom and the grade I want to teach I need to remember that kindergarteners are new to school and they need to be explicitly taught how to do everything. If your student is going to interact with something or perform a movement, they need to be taught what is expected of them.

While this assignment brough up many challenges I think this assignment made me think deeply into what I expect out of my future students and the classroom environment I want to build. My rules and procedures reflect very strongly of the grade level of my future students. When I was making edits I had to add more clarity and strengthen my procedures to meet the needs of my future students. If you are not clear in what you expect, your students are not going to meet your imaginary expectations. This assignment taught me to be more intentional in what to expect and how to address those expectations with my students.

Overall, I learned that there is a lot more procedures you need to create that you would not originally think of. And that is even more important with lower elementary schoolers, who need that extra guidance in what is expected of them in a school environment. My role as the teacher is to have high expectations for my students and help shape their learning and their development. Part of this is having those strong expectations and procedures for them. This assignment required a lot of though and hard work, however it gave me the skills to adequately write my future classroom expectations and procedures.
